What does Quietly do?

Quietly is a private, on-device journal. Write entries with live-rendering formatting (headers, bold, checklists), attach photos, video, or a voice note, organize with tags and color-coded notebooks, and see everywhere you've written on a map. Everything lives on your device by default.

How does the live-formatting editor work?

Type # at the start of a line for a header, wrap text in **asterisks** for bold, or use the checklist/bold/italic buttons in the toolbar above the keyboard. The syntax characters only show on the line you're actively editing — once you tap away, the entry settles into clean, formatted text.

Is there a subscription?

No. Quietly is free for your first 20 entries. After that, a single one-time payment of $9.99 unlocks unlimited writing, forever — no monthly or yearly fee, and no subscription of any kind.

Does my journal ever leave my phone?

Not by default. Quietly works fully in airplane mode. If you want your entries on more than one device, turn on sync in Settings → Sync — it's off by default, and even when on, it's end-to-end encrypted and covers only your written entries (not photos, videos, or voice notes, which always stay local). How do I turn on sync?

Settings → Sync → toggle "Sync across your devices" on, on each device you want to include. The first time you enable it, Quietly waits briefly to see if one of your other devices already has the encryption key (via iCloud Keychain) before creating a new one — this can take a minute the first time.

How do voice notes and transcription work?

Tap the microphone icon while writing an entry to record a voice note. Once recorded, tap the transcribe icon on that voice note to convert it to text — transcription happens entirely on-device using Apple's Speech framework, and you can then insert the transcript directly into your entry.

Can I add an entry without opening the app?

Yes — say "Hey Siri, add a journal entry to Quietly," or use the Shortcuts app. If you already have an entry for today, it's appended to that entry; otherwise a new one is created.

How do I get my entries out of Quietly?

Settings → Export builds a full backup of every entry, photo, and attachment as JSON and Markdown files, which you can save or share anywhere via the share sheet. There's no lock-in.

I turned on Face ID lock and now I can't get in — help!

Face ID/passcode lock uses your device's own authentication — if you can unlock your phone, you can unlock Quietly. If you're still stuck, email us and we'll help you recover your entries.
