Privacy Policy

The short version: Quietly is a private journal that lives on your device. By default nothing you write ever leaves your phone. If you choose to turn on sync, your written entries travel between your own devices end-to-end encrypted — we never see them, and neither does anyone else. Photos, videos, and voice notes always stay local-only, sync or no sync.
Who we are
Quietly ("the app", "we", "us") is an iOS and iPadOS journaling app. This policy explains how the app handles your information.
Data we collect
None, by default. Specifically:
- We do not require an account, sign-in, or any personal information to use the app.
- We do not include third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
- We do not track you across apps or websites.
- Your entries, photos, videos, and voice notes are stored only in the app's private storage on your device, protected by your device's passcode/Face ID (Data Protection).
You can verify this yourself: Quietly works fully in airplane mode, and stays that way unless you opt into sync below.
Optional sync (off by default)
Quietly can optionally sync your written entries — text, dates, favorites, tags, and notebook names/colors — between your own devices via iCloud. This is:
- Off by default. You turn it on yourself, in Settings → Sync.
- End-to-end encrypted. Before anything is synced, it's encrypted on your device with a key that lives only in your iCloud Keychain — the same private channel Apple uses for saved passwords — and travels device-to-device without ever passing through Quietly's own systems. We cannot read your synced entries, and nothing about their content is visible to us.
- Text only. Photos, videos, and voice notes are never included in sync — they remain local to the device you attached them on, always.
Turning sync off at any time stops further syncing; it does not delete anything already stored in your iCloud account, which you can manage or remove yourself via Settings → [your name] → iCloud on your device.
Location and weather
If you enable "City & weather" in Settings, new entries are tagged with a city-level label and the day's weather. Quietly never captures or stores precise coordinates — locations are rounded to roughly city-level and stay on your device (or travel only as part of encrypted sync, if you've turned that on).
Photos, camera, and microphone access
Quietly asks permission to use your camera, photo library, and microphone only when you choose to attach a photo, video, or voice note to an entry. These attachments are copied into the app's own private storage; Quietly does not access your library or microphone at any other time.
On-device transcription
If you use Quietly's "Transcribe" feature on a voice note, the audio is transcribed entirely on your device using Apple's on-device Speech recognition. The recording and its transcript never leave your phone.
Siri & Shortcuts
If you use "Hey Siri, add a journal entry" or the Shortcuts app to capture an entry, that request and its text are handled entirely on-device by Apple's Siri/App Intents frameworks and Quietly itself — nothing is sent to our servers, because we don't have any.
Purchases
Quietly offers 20 free entries, after which a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase unlocks unlimited entries. Purchases are processed entirely by Apple via StoreKit; we do not receive or store your payment information.
