A full video studio that runs on the phone, not the cloud

How we built Cineo as a real multi-track photo and video studio that renders entirely on-device - so footage never uploads and the basics aren't rented back monthly.

The problem

Serious mobile video editors tend to share two traits: they rent you the basics back as a monthly subscription, and their heavier effects and exports run in the cloud - which means your footage gets uploaded to someone else's servers to be processed. Both of those exist because of an old assumption: that a phone can't do real editing work on its own.

That assumption is out of date. Apple Silicon is genuinely fast, and we wanted to prove a full multi-track studio could run on the device - private, quick, and without holding anyone's footage hostage.

Constraints

We held the build to three rules:

  • Everything renders on-device. Filters, effects, animations, and export all had to run locally. Nothing uploads, ever - that's the whole point.
  • A real timeline, not a toy. Multi-track video, photo, and collage editing with the tools people actually reach for: transitions, text, stickers, speed, and more.
  • No lock-in. A generous free tier, and if you want Pro, a lifetime option so you're never forced onto a subscription treadmill.

The phone in your pocket can do the work the cloud used to charge you for. Once it can, uploading your footage to a server is a choice, not a requirement.

What we built

Cineo is a full photo and video studio on a real multi-track timeline: filters, effects, animations, stickers, text, collage, and more - all rendered on the device. We built a deep set of tools people expect from a desktop editor, from transitions and captions to speed control and layered elements, and kept the whole pipeline local so nothing you shoot is ever sent away.

The home screen was designed to make a powerful tool feel approachable, and every export carries a clean, on-device render - no round trip to a server.

The tech

A native app that leans on Apple Silicon for on-device media processing and export, with a multi-track editing engine covered by an extensive suite of tests. Monetization is a free tier plus an optional Pro unlock available as a lifetime purchase, so nobody has to subscribe to keep the basics - and because processing is local, the business never depends on the footage.

The outcome

Cineo shipped to the App Store as a private, capable, no-lock-in editor: a real multi-track studio that renders on the phone, keeps your footage local, and offers a lifetime unlock instead of a forced subscription. It's a demonstration of what on-device processing makes possible - power without the upload.
